Prevent Pet Poisoning
Almost half the calls to Pet Poison Helpline are for pets that accidentally ingested human medications. Of the top 5 human prescriptions sold in the U.S. three cause minor symptoms and two can be potentially life-threatening in pets.
Lipitor, Nexium, and Plavix all are considered non-toxic to pets and normally cause only mild side effects like vomiting and diarrhea.
Advair Diskus (asthma inhaler) and Abilify (antipsychotic) can both cause serious side effects and can be life threatening. If your pet ingests either of these drugs they need immediate veterinary attention.
To help prevent pet poisoning with human medications consider the following: Store human medication in a different location than pet medications. Be careful with those plastic weekly pill holders. Some dogs are attracted to them as chew toys. Don't transfer medication to non child (pet) proof containers like plastic bags.
